How to change your money self concept

Quick answer

Your money self concept is how you see yourself when it comes to money. If you see yourself as someone who is always paid and always has enough, that is what shows up. To change it, notice old money lines, choose new ones, say them often and think like someone who always has plenty.

Some people seem to have money find them without even trying. Others feel like money slips away the second it arrives. The difference is often the money self concept, the quiet story each person tells about who they are with money.

The good part is that this story is not fixed. It was learned, and it can be swapped. Let's look at what yours is right now, and how to change it.

What a money self concept is

Self concept is how you see yourself. Your money self concept is the part of that story that is about money.

It sounds like:

  • I am good with money, or I am bad with money.
  • Money comes to me, or money avoids me.
  • I am lucky, or I am never lucky.
  • There is always enough, or there is never enough.

Whatever you assume about yourself with money sets what you accept as normal. And what you accept as normal is what you live.

If self concept is new to you, our beginner guide on self concept in the law of assumption is a lovely place to start.

Signs of an old money story

How do you know if your money self concept needs a refresh? Here are a few gentle clues:

  • You wince a little when you open your bank app.
  • You say "I cannot afford that" before you even look at the price.
  • You feel guilty when you spend money on yourself.
  • You think rich people are different from you.
  • You expect bills to be scary.

None of these mean you did anything wrong. They are just lines you picked up and kept saying. The more you said them, the more they felt true. That is all.

Money follows how you see yourself.

How to change your money self concept

Here is a simple way to do it:

  1. Catch an old line. When it plays, just notice it. No fight needed.
  2. Choose a new one. "I cannot afford that" becomes "I can afford anything I want."
  3. Say it often. In the shower, on your commute, while the kettle boils.
  4. Think from it. Ask, "How would someone who always has plenty feel right now?" Let yourself borrow that feeling for a moment.
  5. Persist. Keep choosing the new line, day after day, even when the 3D still looks the same.

The 3D is what you can see around you right now. It shows the old story, and it catches up.

What you say to yourself all day is called your mental diet. Our post on the money mental diet shows how to keep it full of good money lines. The Manifesting money course also takes you through your money self concept one short lesson at a time.

Lines for a new money story

Borrow any of these and make them yours:

  • I am always paid.
  • Money loves me.
  • I am someone who always has plenty.
  • I am lucky with money.
  • Money finds me everywhere.
  • Having money is normal for me.
  • I am wealthy, and it feels natural.

Put one on your lock screen. Not sure which? The phone wallpaper affirmation quiz will pick one for you. And for a longer list, see our post on law of assumption money affirmations.

Living as someone who always has enough

Picture someone who always has enough. How do they open their bank app? Calmly, like opening the fridge. How do they feel about a bill? Totally fine. How do they think about the future? With ease.

That person is you, in your mind, right now. You do not need to wait for the money to arrive to think like this. In fact, thinking like this is how the new story settles in.

People sometimes ask why we say lack does not really exist. Here is the simple version. Lack is only what the old story shows. When you assume plenty, plenty is your world. The old picture is just a photo of what you used to assume.

And if you slip into the old story for a day, nothing is undone. You cannot mess it up. Come back to the new lines and carry on.

Try this today

  1. Catch one old money line today and flip it to its opposite.
  2. Put a money line on your lock screen.
  3. For one minute, think like someone who always has enough.

Questions people ask

Do I need to feel rich to manifest money?

No. You do not have to feel rich and you do not have to believe it yet. Saying the new lines, even flat, is what changes the story.

How do I stop feeling broke?

Notice the broke thoughts without fighting them, and swap each one for a new line like I always have enough. The feeling softens as the new story becomes normal.

Can my money self concept change fast?

It can. There is no set pace. Every time you choose a new line, the new story gets stronger.

What is the difference between a money self concept and a money mindset?

They overlap a lot. Your money self concept is about who you are with money. The lines you think all day come from that. Change who you are, and the thoughts follow.

Where did my old money story come from?

Usually from things you heard growing up and kept repeating. You did not choose it, but you can choose a new one now.
